MOBO / CPU question

Yes
Now, I pretty much thought I knew enough about this sort of thing as I have built several computers before... anyhow, bear with me on this one.

g/f has a Packard Bell iMedia 3082 - needs more memory, so I open it up and find an ASUS P4R800VM Rev 1.0 MOBO in there. consult the ASUS website to find the compatable ram and I check the ram already installed.

I order (what I think is) the correct RAM and install it but get all sorts of problems, which gets me wondering... I put the old RAM back in and computer works fine... Further digging turns up that the MOBO is in fact a customn build for Packard Bell called the COOPER PDI P4R800VM... and the RAM needed is different - turns out it is twice the price (£35/1GB stick) of what I just paid (£35/2GB sticks) - I figure that for the cost of a new MOBO (£40) and two 1GB sticks of RAM (£15) I can replace the MOBO and RAM at the same time.

the question is therefore:

She has a Intel P4 (2.8 GHz) Northwood A80532 CPU socket 478

would that work in any old socket 478 MOBO?

the one I had in mind is the Asrock P4I945GC and has specs as follows:
Socket 478 for Intel® Pentium® 4 / Celeron® D (Prescott, Northwood) processors
Intel® 945GC + ICH7 Chipsets
FSB 800/533/400 MHz

any help would be gratefully appreciated.

It's such an old processor it'll be easier to build her a new pc.
