How can I make these look at little better, as they do look a little dated

It's not changed much! It will be hard to 'modernise' as the subjects clothes etc are what look dated

Not changed at all really.

I meant to tidy up the picture, make them not as fuzzy or do you think its this that gives it the character of being on film

Yes. If you Google "cross processing in CS*" then just do the opposite!
