Hey all, as you may or may not know I have recently got my first digital SLR camera and I'm unsure what to spend this spare bit of money I have on.

I can either buy a new lens and a external hard drive and use my mum's PC to edit photos or buy a cheap PC (still capable of running Photoshop and Lightroom) and an external hard drive, but no lens.

Anyway, as I'm unsure I thought I'd ask you guys :)
 
Presumably it came with a kit lens - use that for a while as they still take decent shots, but getting your own PC would seem a good bet. Try and budget for an IPS screen if possible as the colours on a TN screen usually leave a lot to be desired.

Get the PC stick with the standard lens for now then you will appreciate the new lens when you get it later on

What lenses do you have ?

If you are going to buy an external HDD whichever route you go, then buy one and see how easy / convenient it is to use your mums PC - if there are no issues and it's easy to access it etc, then I'd suggest a new lens in the near future.

Once you start using your new Camera in different situations, this will then show up what lenses you need to be looking at...
 
The lens I have is an 18-55mm kit lens. For what I have used my camera for so far it has been great but I have a feeling it won't be so good when I get outside and start doing some nature shots.
 
You would find it works out cheaper to build a computer than buy one outright. I built mine for around £500, but to get the same in a shop was over a grand. Depending on your budget you might get a PC and a reasonable second hand lens depending on what you have and what you want.
 
Keep an eye on the Dell outlet, sometimes good deals on there although they come without a screen.

I've built a computer before, I was just thinking about buying a dual core with 3 gig of ram for around £90. More or less the same as it would cost if you were to build it yourself minus the things that may go wrong :p

You could do with a longer reach lens, obviously budget plays a part.

The Canon 55-250 IS is well worth a look and a great lens for the price, if budget allows, the Canon 70-300 IS is a very good lens. Then you jump to the 70-200 L range and the price jumps as well.
 
I think I'm going to go for the computer and save up for a lens. I can experiment with photos and get better at editing ect. before I go on to buy more lenses. I'll be able to get more out of them then, as my expertise will have grown :D
