Monitor calibrations - why different results?

Hi,

I've got a new macbook hooked up to a Dell 2408WFP and a Spyder Pro 3 calibration device.

When I calibrate the monitors I get very different results, the mb screen seems to be warmer with a slight brown hue, whereas the dell is slightly more blue. Is this normal? My understanding is that the calibration was designed to remove any differences.

Also, if I run the calibration more than once I get different results despite all factors appearing to be the same (including ambient light).

I had different result too, but I did the test in a dark room, shut the blind, and made sure the sensor was in the middle of the target zone on the box!

After that all was ok!

So it was the conditions that the test was done in? I did the tests in the same place, with the same amount of ambient light at the same time. Guess I'll have to run them in the dark!

Will this affect the results when viewed in ambient light?

I did the test in the same room but it was sunny so I closed the blind and did the test again and it was ok. I put it down to light seeping into the sensor area.
 
I take it the MBP is the new unibody version with the LED backlight screen. If so "Snap".

I don't know the Spyder software, as I use the Eye-1 from GM. If you look at the response curve you'll see that the Blue curve ( and maybe a bit of the green curve, is not linear to the other curves. It shows a fall off over the range. hence the colour shift. This is I suspect is due to the Video card is doing all the calibration and just can't drive the screen hard enough in the blue channel. There are as you know no hardware controls for the screen on the MPB.

With the dell you are probably doing a lot of the work using hardware controls so the amount of correction coming from the video card is fairly small hence the near neutral response.

Changing the MPB screen brightness doesn't make things better.

Personally I use the MPB display as a good guide, but any critical work gets done on the 24"
 
I too have a MBP and the same dell monitor as you... I was told the MBP Screen are not really that good the dell kick A**S compare tot he MBP screen. My Dell screen is quite a bit different from what i see on my MBP. But when I print out my photo it MATCH the dell screen and not the MBP Screen so now I do most of my photo work on the external
 
I had the same issue with my white MacBook, so I sent the profiles off to datacolor to look at and they said it was because my external monitor could display more colours than the laptop and even provided a graphic visualising the profiles I sent them over each other.

This is correct... The dell 2408WFP is a 110 Gramut so it produce more colour than the MBP Screen does.
 
Thanks very much. Looks like I'm stuck with the difference then. Not to worry, as mentioned above the laptop screen is just for checking, the big edits get done on the Dell (lovely display that it is).
