I've just started using an LG w2243s monitor and the recommended resolution is 1920 x 1080. Trouble is when I sue this setting everything looks tiny or web pages like this one are stretched across the screen.

Is it always best to use the recommended res or can anything else be done to improve things?

On an LCD you should always use the recommended resolution and change the text size if it is too small. Unlike CRT displays, due to their design LCDs do not play nicely at different resolutions and the image quality will be massively degraded.

There is no need for the web browser software to use the full width of the screen though, that's under your control. If you want a square web browser just reduce the width of the window.

That said, full HD on a 22" monitor is going to (by default) result in tiny text. Fortunately text size can be changed without changing screen resolution.
