Monopod head needed?

I'm planning to buy a monopod but since I've never used one, I'm not quite sure what I need. Obviously the monopod itself, but I also want to be able to remove the camera from it quickly. I assume this means I'll need a quick release plate, but when will that fit into? Do I then HAVE to buy a head? I don't really care about a head as I can simply tilt the monopod to the position I want (and if I get it and notice I'm limited, I can get a head further down the line).

So could someone please tell me what I actually need?

By the way, I should mention that it will be used with a d7000 with 300mm f4 and 1.4tc. Not the heaviest of lenses but the combined weight will be around 2.4kg and I want it to be held nice and solidly.

A QR adapter would do it. It's a plate that screws onto the monopod then the qr fits onto that. I have the Culmann adapter that works very well on all my gear.

for £16 you can get a ball head and a QR plate that will handle 3kg.
