Just thought I'd let you know that I've now got a Manfrotto 681B and am very pleased with it. It isn't too heavy, it's very rigid and well made and Much better than hand holding. Am awaiting delivery of a Tamrac Expedition 3 . Be all set to get out on some walks then.
 
I'm still torn between a monopod and a tripod. Where did you get this one from, and how much did it set you back?
 
I've got a Hama Star 63 (Chinese?) tripod and I think it's good enough for me until I win the lottery! It cost about £25. The Manfrotto monopod cost about £43 and I got it from Bristol cameras by post.It really is better than just me hand holding. I can see me taking it on all casual outings.
 
I've got a 681B too. Only used it a few times so far but really like it.
Also makes you feel safer having something like that around if someone tries to swipe your gear haha!
