I’m toying with upgrading from my 55-200 non-VR kit lens and fancy either the Nikon 55-300 VR or the Sigma 70-300 APO Macro. I think I’m edging towards the Nikon as I’ve already got the Sigma 105 so I don’t really need another macro. Anyway, one of the issues I picked up on regarding the Sigma APO Macro was people complaining of it having an annoyingly noisy motor and that got me to thinking ...


When you've got a body with a built-in AF motor and then you add a lens that's also got it's own AF motor (e.g. Sigma HSM), which motor takes priority in operation ... which one does the work?
 
The Sigma HSM (and Nikon AF-S) lenses have no driver screw and this fact is communicated to the body so it doesn't try using its own AF motor.

TBH, if I were in your shoes and something in the 70-300 range was on the cards, I would be looking for a Nikon 70-300 VR 2nd hand. As you say, you already have a Macro lens and the Sigma 70-300 isn't really a Macro anyway - it will focus a little closer than a non-macro version but it's not proper Macro (which your 105 is!).
