Anyone know what this is? It was very small, about 2 cm long (roughly), seen in Somerset. I thought that what I could see as a dark mark on it's back might be a clue but looking at the images I'm wondering if the 'mark' is where some of the hair some moths have on the backs of their necks has rubbed off.

Sorry can't help with the ID, but can confirm that patch on the back is where the fur/scales have come off. I have a stack somewhere of an old moth with the same thing. They looks like they are made of plastic underneath, and its is quite a bright orange colour... very weird.

Thanks Tim. It's not something I've noticed before but then I don't usually make a close study of small silver moths. Just this one sat so obligingly it was asking for its portrait to be taken. It was too small to really see the mark clearly (my eyes were young once but no longer!) and it wasn't till I looked at the pictures that I could see it properly.
