I am a m/cycle racer and want to get into some photography whilst i am at the circuits.
I have been offered 2 cameras and would be grateful on which you guys would recommed.
Canon EOS 1DS 11.1mp £650 Body only
Canon EOS 5D 12.8mp £800 Body only
Both cameras are new.

I have budget for lenses at maximum £2500 please advise.

Thank you in advance

1DS for weather proofing - y'just can't rely on the weather :)

Lens 70-200mm IS L F2.8 with a Canon 1.4 extender II. I've had great results with 2x extender too.... others, not so much.

I *personally* would prefer a 1D (no 'S') Mark whatever for the higher frame rates....

Welcome to TP Rich :)

I wouldn't go for either of those cameras. The 1Ds is seven years old now - things have moved on, plus it's full frame. And the 5D never was an action camera.

You will get more reach from a crop format camera. 1DMkIII is currently pick of the bunch, but it's big and expensive. New 7D looks extemely promising though, coming in around £1400 but will be a lot less after Xmas.

You need reach with bikes, though I'm guessing as a racer yourself you will probably get good access at most meetings. I would look at 100-400L IS as first choice, but there are lots of other options - Canon makes four versions of a 70-200L and there's a case for all of them, with and without IS, with and without an Extender. I wouldn't dismiss the 70-300 IS either; in fact I would ask if you really need to spend that much on lenses?

If you want Canon, in order of preference currently for motorsport:

40D/50D, 7D, 1DMkII or IIN, 1DMkIII or wait til MkIV.

Note how none of those are full frame.

My colleague does use a full frame camera for motorsport *some of the time*... mainly just for pitlane/grid static shots or some other time when you get really really close.

Remember just because you are allowed out on the circuit whilst sat on your bike, you won't necessarily be allowed trackside to take photos.... for that you will need media accreditation and/or PLI.
