Move to Compact system from DSLR?

Over the last year since deciding to stop photographing the British Drift Championship for my friends website I have barely used my camera and it's begining to be somewhat annoying.
My theory now is to move to a compact system as to give me less of an excuse to not have the camera with me, I'm seeing it as less of a 'chore' to carry the kit around.

I have no knowledge of the compact system market, so I'm after some advice really, should I really sell my 50D and all the kit with it (24-105, 30mm and 10-20mm) and move to a compact system? I think I'd certainly have the camera with me more often, but would I notice image quality reduction and or flexibility?

Which are good cameras to be looking at?
 
Look at the Panasonic G/GH series. DSLR styling, smaller bodies and MUCH smaller lenses. Alternatively, Olympus have some decent offerings (but they are too small for my hands). There are plenty of decent lenses for micro 4/3rds and it's easy to adapt older manual lenses to micro 4/3rds.

DxOMark shows the GH3 (and hence the Olympus OMD-EM5) to measure either equal to or better than the 50D, so unlikely to have a reduction in quality...
 
PS. I moved from Canon 5D2 -> Panasonic G5 a year ago and have absolutely no regrets.
 
I moved to Fuji X after DSLRs (Sony a77, Nikon D90, Canon 5D) and if anything I far prefer the images from my X-E1, plus I get the major bonus of being able to take it anywhere very comfortably.

I have the 14mm 2.8, 35mm 1.4 and 60mm 2.4 (which will be replaced by the 56mm 1.2 when it comes out next year), couldn't be happier...http://www.flickr.com/photos/harry_s/sets/72157633814984521/

I'm off on my honeymoon next week (travelling around USA for several weeks) and the biggest compliment I can pay my Fuji is that money no object I wouldn't want anything else.

Yes, if you want a poor performing compact camera AND you want to retain the one of the key downsides of DSLRs - large lenses.
 
I'm in the process of moving from a Nikon D600 and a few pro lenses to the Fuji X-E1 for the exact same reason, it's pointless having a bag full of kit and just leaving it in the house! From the reading I've done there's very little between the image quality of the new Fuji X cameras and some full frame cameras, so you can expect a significant increase in quality over your D50.

Your main options are either a micro four thirds body (the Olympus OMD is a good bet) and the Fuji X series, both have excellent lenses available.
 
I really like the look of both size and style of the fuji x-e1 camera, I do think this would be the best way for me to go!

This is exactly the situation I think would give me a kick up the rear to get me active in capturing light again!
