My canon 450d has issues

The bit in the top half of the camera its shown with the circular bit in the centre in the photo.

Yeah, I realised this yesterday i've definitely done something there because I noticed I can see the red dots very very faintly when I hear the focus lock beeps. They've definitely been blown off!

I reverse my lens to take macro shots which means taking the lens off.

Ok, I think then, perhaps you need to consider getting a lint-free cloth, and ensuring the lens is clean before taking it off for reversing.

to throw a spanner in the works if the camera is set to auto select AF points then no red dots show for me (on my 450)
They do however come up when the camera is set to any given AF point

other settings are M AF servo and lens on AF

Just read this thread from start to finish and I'm sorry but is it some kind of belated april fool? The OP posts on here looking for help and what follows are many many useful inputs flooding in from every direction asking her to go through the basics and systematically rule all possibilities out. Many toys out of the pram later and those helpful posters are basically told to poke off. Leave her to it then I say, you've done your best.

To Uneducated Rick and Odd Jim: Kudos for doing your best to help her chaps but she seems pretty unreceptive to good advice at the moment.

bit harsh trixster (though I'm not sure why toys were thrown) as with all the many brains of TP we haven't fixed it yet ;)

Not really. Uneducated Rick in particular appeared to trying quite hard but got met by a temper tantrum. Obviously it's not nice at all to have a problem with your kit but you're not going to get much help if you throw people's suggestions back in their face. Advice on here is free and people take up their own valuable time to try to sort out numerous problems which would cost a lot to rectify if you went to a shop instead.

Anyway, moving on....

They did show when cam was set to MF but I realised after looking carefully that the red focus points have totally faded, so they're there but hardly visible.

OP was obviously and understandibly upset about her camera, I took no offence and understood. Water under the bridge

Get a red marker pen and colour them back onto your focus screen......;) :exit:

Seriously, I'd take it back to Currys or whereever first and play stupid, deny any wrong doing, and see if they'll replace it. If they don't, you've not lost anything, you can then take it to a Canon repair centre for a patchup! :)

The AF points are not going to show if the lens is reversed. The camera needs the AF contact points from the lens to be able to activate them. The only way I've managed to not have any show is using a manual lens or fitting without electrical contacts. As has been said on the lower right of the viewfinder display, next to the meter is a green spot. This lights when focus is achieved, so even if the AF point's aren't lighting you should be getting this indicator, are you seeing this ? Given you've been reversing the lens, it might be the electrical contacts are grubbing up a little, have a close look at them, do they show signs of tarnishing ? (I'm not sure what the best option for cleaning them would be, so I can't recommend anything). If all looks good, put the lens back on the camera, set to AF, one shot, and the mode wheel to A-DEP, choose something like a textured table top, and try and focus at an angle of about 45 degrees. What happens ?

so, you take a photo, select a focal point but it doesnt flash or light in anyway to tel you which one isbeing used. it doesnt flash when it is focusing but the lens does find focus and the camera bleeps to confirm this. you can take the picture which records to the memory card and you can view it on the computer and it looks fine(correctly exposed with correct point in focus).

the only thing it doesnt do is the focal points dont flash.

am i right?

LOL!

I think I will try both, I haven't done so yet but I will contact currys aswell as canon.
Is this not set within the menu system on or off, check your manual...
No it's not :)

I'm sorry but I wasn't trying to see focus points with the lens reversed, I do use my lens the correct way too and they don't show.

Yes I'm seeing the green dot indicator which proves that the sensor has messed up.

Still no red dots, you know I wasn't trying to achieve red dots while my lens was reversed even I know that doesn't work.

Thanks for your detailed response :)

You're correct :)

Not yet, I'm gonna see if I can get it sorted from a Camera specialist.

You should take it back to Currys or Canon as that'll probably be the cheapest way since that's who your warranty is with. A 'camera specialist' is more than likely going to charge you quite a bit to sort out your issue. Also, if you get it done by third party and later have issues, you might not be able to go back to Canon/Currys because that could void the warranty (I'm not 100% but its possible).
