The bee keeper had put a rack down on the floor for me to shoot. After about 20 minutes a dung fly was trying to eat some of the bees honey which was store in these cells,it would have about 3 or 4 seconds before the workers would come over and shoe it off.It kepted on coming back ***,this was going on the hole time the rack was left on the floor.

Drones never exhibit typical worker bee behaviors such as nectar and pollen gathering, nursing, or hive construction. Since the worker bee's stinger is a modified ovipositor (an egg laying organ), the drones are defenseless and cannot defend the hive- although if picked up will sometimes try to frighten the disturber by swinging its tail towards the fingers. This has led the drone to be considered as a canonical example of a worthless member of a society. Although the drone is highly specialized to one function, mating and continuing the propagation of the hive, it is not completely without side benefit to the hive. All bees, when they sense the hive's temperature deviating from proper limits, either generate heat by shivering, or exhaust heat by moving air with their wings — behaviors which drones do share with worker bees. They will also, in some species, if the nest is disturbed, buzz around the intruder in an attempt to tail

An excellent series of shots MJ, showing things most people will never have seen before.

I look forward to your book. Are you getting it published or is for personal use?

Cool, i think thats a really good idea mate, and you have some superb images to go in it. I dont sell my work through DA, i have sold on the stock sites and been asked for prints from people on some of the forums, however im now working with a Media agent who has some really interesting things in the pipeline and lots of contacts.

Good pictures and interesting reading too. thanks for sharing.

I've seen this before on POTN and it's a super series and well worth another look (y)

Super set. Gives me the shivers just looking at them. You're a braver man that I.

There are some splendid shots here and fascinating stuff. My personal preference is for the bees 'en mass' so to speak, but that's just me. I love the colour pallette. Was the bee farm open to the public or was it a commission? No doubt you were very pleased with the results; I know I would have been!

i joined a bee forum and asked about until somone was willing to let me photograph there bees..i gave them all the images for free on a cd after i was done.its not open to the public...i was going to get my own hive..i have an idea where i could keep it..i would have to have a word with the farmer 1st..but cost is an issue..i need a few hundred £ to set it up but i just havnt got that sort of money at the moment..one day ***:)

What a good idea, I guess you could ask on any specialist forum for such an opportunity if there's something particular you want to photograph; the most they can do is ignore your request.
Well done once again and I hope you manage go get your hive one day - we'd get to see more great bee photos then. :)

What an amazing set of shots, wonderful details (y)
