Hi all,
Just got back from the camera shop with my new EOS 7d and Canon EF-S 17-55 2.8. I'm eagerly absorbing the manual and chewing my fingers off in anticipation of getting out there with it while the battery charges, and I wondered if any other forum members out there have any great 'out of the box' setup hints/tips that maybe wouldn't be immediately obvious to a first time Canon user. I know a lot of it will be personal preference or dependant on situation, but I'd love to hear some opinions.

I found a lot of useful info in the 7D Owners thread in this forum :)
 
Thanks Russ! :) I Have been reading a lot of that thread during the build up to the purchase, but I'll definitely revisit now that I can play around with the camera.

Enable the blinkies "highlight alert"
Use the histogram and ETTR when pushing the iso above 800. If you under expose it can get a touch noisy.
C.Fn 3 - 6 i turned off the zone modes and just use expanded/single/spot focus points.
 
Just click, click, click. It's a great camera.

Seriousley that is my advice. When I first had it I was going out to take shots and leaving ISO on auto (so my early morning shots were very grainy). This kind of stuff only becomes 2nd nature when you are very familiar with the camera.

Also I left the focus on auto selection. I always focus on point now. I also tend to use manual mode all the time unless I am in a dark location when I switch to TV and auto ISO.

I would agree with all this, especially the bit about Exposing to the Right.
 
If you want/need to shoot at the full 8fps disable 'silent shooting'.
Learn and make use of C1,C2 & C3, have one set up for action, one for video, the other for whatever :)
