My new Nikon 50mm 1.8D

Well after lots of pondering wondering and thinking, I have finally bought myself a brand new Nikon 50mm 1.8D I do know that this lens will not autofocus on my current camera, and I also know what the 50mm will be like on a crop body.

The reason I bought the 50mm 1.8D older model, rather then the new Nikon AF-S Nikkor 35mm 1:1.8G DX is because...

It is a lot cheaper than the G model, it also looks so much nicer. Some people have said the newer model is not as well made as the older version, I have no idea if this is true.

I will be using the lens mainly for low light stuff and wont worry about autofocus, this in turn will make me take time and think more about the shot I am trying to do.

Also when I come to change my body, there are a couple of bodies out there that this lens will autofocus on, I think one is the D90. Yes an old model, but another chance to save money again.

It was those reasons, plus there is something about this lens I really do like, I just don't know what it is !

I used my copy of this lens to produce a portfolio of my stepdaughter a few years ago....

Just to add to that Jon,

The 50mm was my first 1.8 lens and as such I initially shot wide open only to find that with such a shallow DOF I didn't get all facial features in focus ...depends what you want from the shot but i found myself stopping down a little to get what I wanted!
Besides most lenses are usually sharper when stopped down a fraction anyway!

Hi Asha I am pretty pleased with the feel of this lens, just a case of getting out and trying it now..

Oh and that's a lovely pic of a lovely girl you have there, the photo looks really good :thumbs:

Thank you!....She was and remains a beautiful young lady.

Some people find the 50 too tight for portrait, others prefer the 85mm.

I personally found it to be spot on......not just for portraiture.

No doubt you will find out for yourself......another cool thing is of course the lens is light and small so makes an ideal "carry around town" set up in your hand.

Street candid shots perhaps??.............

This lens makes my camera look and feel small and neat, when I had the kit lens on, my camera was ever so clumsy and ugly. I really do hope I have found the right ballance. If not I will have the enjoyment of searching for my next lens all over again ;)

Tbh for what they cost, i don't think they can be knocked really....like any glass they have limitations but I've had more results with my 50 than what I have with some of my other lenses that have cost me 7 times as much.
 
Oh and another bonus I just remembered I now have a fully functioning lens when put on my old Nikon F60 film camera, I have just started to use my old film camera again..:D

Yes I kow...I've been keeping an eye on your threads lol

Cool when you can swap lenses about ...don't forget that on your F60 you will hava a true 50mm as against equivalent 75mm on your digi with the crop factor and although you didn't plunge for a 35mm for your digi you have effectively got the equialent when using this new 50 on full frame (F60).....blimey I've just read that back to myself and it sounds as confusing as hell!! lol

oohh brill I forgot about that when lens is fitted to the old camera, you have just made me even more happier :thumbs:

I also have an old film camera that's been given a new lease of life brill :D
