My next lens

Hi all, i have had a search and i think ive come up with the best choice for my budget and needs, but though i would check before i take the plunge
Any advice will be greatly received!
Write then i currently own a Canon 550d and have the 1.8 50mm.
Im after a good general purpose lens really, as im into photographing stationary cars and fast moving cars. Also wildlife photography and portraits.
The lens i am considering is the canon ef-s 18-200. Would this be a good choice or should i be looking at something else?
 
Well if it was me i'd go for the 70-200 f4 L , you wont get the IS version but this would do most of what you want if you use a tripod for the staionary cars , portraits etc , for the fast moving cars IS probably wouldn't make much difference anyway.
Theres sure to be plenty of other suggestions but this is mine.

Cheers for the replys, i hadnt concidered this lens, so i will be having a look at this now,
One of the reasons i looked into the 18-200 was because when ive been walking round with my prime ive sometimes needed more of a wide angle when taking pics of stationary cars when i couldnt step back any further. And when looking to photograph birds or anyother wildlife i needed something with a zoom.

The 28-135IS lens is a great walk about lens, I used to have one and really liked it, was the great focal length for me.

A sweeping statement indeed :lol:. Granted, compared to to many other lenses it may not hold up as well, but it has its uses and it's been built to fit into a price band, which is why there are compromises in build and IQ.

I think you need something like what Andyred has suggested; a quality optic that has a decent zoom range but isn't trying to do too much, therefore avoiding major compromises in quality. The 28-135 isn't world-class stuff, best-of-the-best, but side-by-side with the 18-200, its the better option.

The 70-200mm f/4 is a great lens but it's a long lens and you're only ever going to get 'long lens' shots (i.e. shallow DoF, background blur), which might suit you but will limit the types of shots you can achieve. For track work it'll be great though.

Cheers, since this thread i have been looking at the 70-200 and im impressed from what ive seen the price seems very good as well, This lens will be on the list for the future, But I think what im looking for is a flexible lens that does all but without too many compromises. Im going to pop into the shop today and have a closer look at the 28-135.
