My son trying to be mean and moody

Not really attempted portraits before, but Dan, my youngest son, wanted something a bit "mean and moody" for his Facebook.

So, armed with the 400D, a Jessops flashgun (chrimbo prezzie) and a reading lamp, we had a bash.

I know there is a lot of room for improvement, but these shots have awakened a desire to learn more.
C+C welcome to help in the learning process.

unless you where after the hard shadows on the b/g i would move him away from it also try to use the flash off the celing to light him.

not a bad start imo " and alot better than mine"

Processing seems a bit strong really. Not feeling the mean and moody look. He's more like bored :) The flash needs to be diffused. Bounce it or buy a diffuser for it because right now its causing some harsh shadows. If you want to try mean and moody maybe go down a back alley with some low light b&w. You won't need a flash just high ISO and a 50mm f/1.8.

He needs more light to give shadow, B & W would do it for me, give the foreboding image, he has strong (viking) features.
