Did you use the onboard flash or a separate flashgun?
If you used a separate on on the hotshoe and used a slow shutterspeed you could have got all those nice lights in the background in shot, and maybe the water with lights shining on it instead of the old black background syndrome.

I didn't take my Camera away this was just taken on a Sony DSC 7 and trying to get him sat still for 5 seconds was a job in itself
