My Windows 7 upgrade in emoticons

I had a problem with my processor working it's wee socks off.

It seems that Win7 sets Win Media Player to streaming automatically.

Sorted now, after wading through a plethora of menu screens.

Shouldn't do... On first run of WMP you should have the option to run default settings or custom. As long as you choose custom, you can specify all the streaming and web access options.

we still need to do some formal testing on 2008 but it looks like just that, a formality.. you have to hand it to MS on their server software, they do manage to get that 99.9% right out of the box.

our US office were reluctant to go to 2008 (even *** I've been rolling it out for a while now). we never even approved Vista.

yet we've approved 7 and 2008 R2 pretty much instantly !

I installed W7 64 Home Premium on my Dell lappy and like it loads. Vista was a nightmare and I was dual booting with XP.
Like it so much I may even delete the XP partition, maybe.

If you still need XP for some reason (maybe some old application) have a look at Windows XP Mode for Windows 7. Very cool and easier than dual booting. You'll need plenty of RAM but I guess you have that if you are running a 64bit OS.

Well, as I posted previously, my new installation of Windows 7 lasted under ten minutes before crashing out. Anyway restarted it and let it do all the updates it wanted to do then removing the old TV card and disabling the onboard sound I have an Audigy2 with the outboard box thingy).

Right now to have a play....

It has not crashed since then.
It seems at all as fast as XP although I have not installed ANYTHING AT ALL (inc virus software or applications).
I like explorer 8.

How does it compare to MacOS Snow Leopard ?

Well unlike some I'm not a fan boy! Windows 7 seems like a great update, there are parts that are just not quite as intuitive as MacOS but it is still useable without a manual which is the whole "intuitive" thing. I will not be changing my main machine to Windows 7 but my second desktop machine is now running it (64bit Professional).

I like explorer 8 with the biggest "like" being that posting on TP actually IS wysiwyg :)

Vista was absolutely pants, XP was very good, ME was pants, 98 was really good... I think I will give Windows 8 a wide birth

Now to install some software on it and see how good it is then.

I think I must be the only person in the world that didn't have an issue with Vista. I've just installed W7 64bit and set it up as a dual boot with my old Vista 64 so I could go back to a known stable system. I have to say that I can't see a huge amount of difference and it looks and feels much like Vista did.

The only annoying issue I've had so far is that when I tried to install my Eye1 Display drivers they were unsigned so had to reboot into the mode that allows you to install unsigned drivers and then it worked OK.

[..]

I suppose now that I have something that is moderately stable (but slow to start) I should try putting back things like Firewall/Defender and see what happens.

MS now have a replacement to Defender called Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) which seems to be working well at the moment. It combines the malware stuff from Defender with a virus checker.

Having been a fan of Vista since day one (3 machines here) I am just as pleased with win 7 which is doing very nicely.

Anthony.
