These South American members of the Raccoon family, known also as Brazilian Aardvarks, are active both day and night and prefer to sleep in elevated treetop nests.
Specifically, they are South American Coati's. Very common (amazed you visited Brazil and didn't get to find out what they were!) critters, but hardly pests or vicious.
