NAS Boxes, or internal hard drives...

Right, I've pretty much run out of space on my current hard drives (one main, one internal backup) + external HDD backup kept offsite

So, do I;

A - Buy another 1/2 internal hard drives. Pretty sure I have spare SATA ports on the Motherboard to do this (and appropriate spare power cables too)

B - Buy a NAS enclosure (this one, perhaps?)

C - Your suggestion

How quick is Networked storage? Is it much slower than internal drives? I assume it would be as quick as the router (think mine is 100mb over the network cables )

personally i wouldnt touch netgear nas boxes anymore after the fiasco i had with their warranty.

ive now offloaded all storage out of my pcs (editing rig, htpc, laptop) into a synology nas. works very well, loading of images in lightroom that are stored on the nas is quick across a 1gigabit LAN, much quicker than the netgear nv+ in fact. that means the editing rig has now got a 60GB SSD drive rather than a sluggish 1TB drive etc.

Matt,

Get a NAS and get a QNAP...!

Do not **** about with the other options, just get the best one..!

As it goes, I've taken a risk on a Netgear one... Figured at £68 if it goes wrong and the support is arse, I'll just replace it - They're offering a free HDD anyway, and according to many it's a Western Digital 500gb drive, which brings the cost down further, so decided it was worth the small risk

I shall report back tomorrow, when it's delivered (assuming ebuyer deliver on time :suspect: )

Synology NAS are superb too - Not sure QNAP is any better - synology seems ta have more applications like photostation which allows me to access all the images on my sestem ermotely - and my music which I can stream from ipod/android phone.

I can also run my blog and web sites straight off the NAS too!

One thing to think about though is that a NAS IS NOT a backup system on its own. Yes you have security if a drive fails but if the system fails your data could be lost! You still need to backup the data.

I have a netgear stora- shout if you want any help/tips :) Found it to be an awesome device

To prove raid is not a backup I am sat at a customers site right now. They have suffered a double disk failure. There goes the data. Just waiting to hear about their backups.

i feel your pain, a couple years back i lost an array controller in a compaq proliant server which nuked all data on all attached drives. which took our our NT4 SAM database. which took out our exchange 5.5 server..

i stayed on site until about 3am then was back in at 7am to see if the tape restore was still running okay.

:tumbleweed: :D

Please to report the stora arrived today from ebuyer, and it's configured and installed itself (after downloading the latest installer from the net, rather than using the CD, as recommended by a reviewer on ebuyer).

Just installing the desktop software now :)

I use the NetGear NV+ range. Although Neils experience was a lousy one with their warranty deals we have had great success with them.

I've got a Synology NAS + 2 x Samsung 1.5TB disks on the way to replace by existing setup, It'll give me something to do next week

when I'm not doing everything else.......

I don't use the netgear software at all, just mapped a drive, done :)

Aye I'm finding the same tbh... Installed it, but don't think I'll need it - I've mapped three drives, one for music, one for photos and one for documents/files (called M, P and F :D)

I also hacked it, well it is my bit of hardware so why not, and got root access to install anything I want :)

yeah, NAS is the way forward, and most of them can be extended with USB drives for extra capacity in the future.
I've got a QNAP one and it's great - means my media is accessible from whatever laptop, phone etc I happen to be using.

these ins can be quite complicated to use but finally got my head around it and can access all my files from any PC or mobile which is great. My server also allow me to run a blog and websites and create image galleries to show clients!

So far so good - My router and irelsee interface is a little slow so may need to update to Gigabit lan or look to connect my pc to it by cable rather than wireless - but good experience so far.

I have the Synology 410 but thy have cheaper ones that look to be great value with the same great interface. I'm using the v3 beta software.
