I hope this doesn't sound like a silly question but i need to get a ND filter for shooting video outdoors but im not sure what to get.

I understand the Principe of what a ND does, and i know i need one so i can use 1/50, F2/8 outdoors with my 60D but its the strength im unsure about.

So far this year ive not shot anything worth keeping but as i only got my 60D end of Dec ive yet to try it out in good sunlight.

Can i ask those who have been shooting outside what you use the most?
I realise it will depend on various things like time of day, sunlight strength etc but i can only afford to get the one filter and dont want to get a really strong one and then have to up the ISO too much.
I was going to play safe and get a Hoya 77mm Pro1 Digital N4 but thought i would ask around first.

Cheers for any help.

Go out on a sunny day and take a shot in Av mode, f/2.8, ISO100 and see what shutter speed it picks. Work out how many stops difference there is between that speed and 1/50s. Buy a filter of that many stops.

Thanks tdodd.
I wanted to get a Fader but the price is a bit too steep for me at the moment as i need a 77mm version.
I dont intend to do a lot of video, and it will only be family/event type stuff so for me £35 from Digit Rev seemed a better way to go, for now. If i do find i use it a lot then ill definitely get a Fader, they do look ideal.
Ill post some results when i can.

I don't want to put you off Digital Rev, but I wish you luck with your purchase. I hope you don't need it in a hurry. I ordered a Hoya Pro1 ND8 from them on 4th Feb. Almost a month passed before I received the product, and they sent me the wrong item. It took another two weeks to get that returned and to receive what I ordered originally (which actually ended up being a substitute product as they could not supply the Hoya Pro1). Prior to that I've had nothing but glowing praise for their service. Mistakes happen, of course, but dealing with Hong Kong via Hong Kong Post can really slow down progress if anything goes wrong. Time zone differences also add a 24 hour delay between communications.

I think you might have jinxed me lol.
My filter just turned up and it doesn't seem to be a genuine Hoya Pro1D. The box just says Hoya Filter ND8 but nothing about Pro1D other than on a sticker that's been hand written. It also doesn't say Pro1D on the filter itself.
Maybe that normal but im not convinced.

Im not sure what to do but ill be getting in touch with them today.

That sounds exactly like the shenanigans I suffered. I ordered a Hoya Pro1D ND8 and they sent some cheapo Hoya ND8, no coatings, nada. They could not source a Hoya Pro1D ND8 at all and ended up sending me a Kenko Zeta ND8, which is supposedly equivalent to a Hoya HD ND8 in quality.
