I'm planning on buying my first DSLR and I just need a bit of advice.

I'm fairly sure I'm either going for Nikon or Canon although I wouldn't have a problem with any other brand. I'll be going out later to see how they handle and from that I'll make a decision.

I only have ~£300 for a body and lens, probably £400 max.

I'd mostly be using it when I visit zoos, I'm planning on visiting WHF for a photo workshop after the summer.

If I decide on Nikon I think I'd prefer the D3000 which I can get for ~£200. Is this a good price?

Could you suggest any lenses that would be suitable?

Hi, I'm a novice and don't no a huge amount about different models and prices, but I think for that budget your best off looking at second hand! For £400 you could get a canon 450d which is a great body this would probably come with a couple lenses and all you need to start!
Going brand new you'll get a pretty average body and less than average lens!!

Would the Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS Autofocus be a good lens for me?

If your mostly shooting at zoos then you would be best served with a telephoto zoom. Best budget zoom by far is the canon 55-250is and £400 could get you a 450d body with 18-55 kit lens and a 55-250 if you shop around and buy used.
As for Canon or Nikon ? At that price range it makes little difference as far as the body is concerned there is nothing between them. However the nearest Nikon equivalent lens is the 55-200. I have owned both and the Canon 55-250 is definitely better. I use Canon and Nikon so have no bias towards either camp just basing it on real life usage of both.
