Running out of room on the laptop, and would like to have a backup also.

Have seen this: 250gb iomega for £39.99 at PCworld. Not usually the cheapest, but is on offer.

Is it any good? Should I look somewhere else.

I have a 100gb drive in the laptop and it have taken a couple of years to fill, so don't have to have anything bigger than the 250gb, but would like a durable and reliable product.

Thanks

One thing to consider is if the drive is a portable type drive (2.5") or a desktop type (3.5") generally speaking the larger desktop drives need powered externally, but the smaller portable type are powered from the USB/FW bus.

Another thing to bear in mind is that where data storage is concerned the cheapest may not be the best, epecially if you have not got a back up.

Yeah, I was concerned that was the case, one of the reasons I am asking this question. Can you recommend anything,

Thanks,

I've been using the LaCie rugged drives for a while and they've held up well.

I've got a couple of LaCie drives too (not the rugged ones though). They've been fine.
Main copy on pc, separate backups on each external drive. The chances of all three going down at once is pretty slim. Keep one off-site and I think it's a reasonable solution for home use.

3rd for LaCie. :)

had a portable for a while. nice bit of kit and easily the sexiest drives about! :D

Remember that if you have an external device that will hold 250gb of data, then you are going to want a second device that can hold 250gb of data for back-up purposes.

another LaCie here, get them cheap from ASDA of all places.
Got a 500GB for £55 and I was in the other day they had 1TB for £67

Yeah, gonna do a dvd backup and then have the external disc. Keep the DVD's at a relatives.

Can't go wrong with a Western Digital My Book imo. Not sure on price as I've had mine quite a while, but they look good as well as being functional :D
Same as - I have 3 of these and two WD internal drives (one of which is 7yrs old and has had a hammering) and - fingers crossed - I've not had a problem yet

Far simpler, quicker and safer to backup to two external hard drives. If/when one fails, its replacement should be cheaper or better value, and you backup from the one that's hopefully still working.
