my creative ability stops at photographs, but i need to get my site started. I cant chose if i should go with the more professional chrisreedphotography.com, or something more fun like caughtlookinginlondon.com i want the site to be halfway between dirty dirty dancing/ face addict, and your standard photographers website.

i'm leaning towards chris reed, as its more versatile.
 
chrisreed is unfortunately one of those that you will premanently be spelling out to people over the phone though. I would think again. I dont think there is anything wrong with a 'catchphrase' as a domain name, so long as it is easy to remember, can only be spelt one way, and doesnt have hyphens, etc.
 
There are a few "reedphotography" dots not taken yet, but alas dot com is. Quite quirky too.

I agree with shorter/punchier is better.

I really can't understand the companies who have double-u.ivereallytriedtomakethisurlthelongestandmosttiresometotypeoutasIcan.com

Some even whack loads of hyphens in amongst the words just to really confuse you such as double-u .ive-really-tried-to-make-this-url-the-longest-and-most-tiresome-to-type-out-as-I-can-are-you-bored-yet-or-on-some-dodgy-porn-site-cos-you-got-a-digit-wrong.com

It's all well and good having your full company name in the URL but if it's 2 or more words or consists of very long words you run the risk of people not typing it properly (especially if you have john@, info@ email address with the same domain) and losing business or peeving them off before they're even seen your site.

Punchy and easy to spell works best. Ideally one that you can verbally relate to someone (over the phone/radio etc) and they know pretty much what to type in whithout writing it down.

I remember hearing a radio ad in the Yorkshire region for some car sales place with this bloke repeating over and over through the ad that you should basically "go to ker-rillia-cars.com" (that's typed how it sounded). Bored one night and mulling the name over in a web URL context, I thought how the hell do you spell that and tried to find the site on Google and by guessing spellings of the name. Never did find it........case in point.
