Need info on using torch with color gels

Hello I am looking for some info on using flashlights (torch) with color gels. Have you done this and if so could you please give me some info on the type of light you used. Also if you have any links that demonstrate how to do this it would be great. Thanks.

Wow this is a first! No replies in two days, I guess this is not a popular subject.
 
Haven't done it, only used torches with inherently different colour temperatures, but if I wanted to I would just use any torch I had that didn't kick out a bucket full of heat once it got going (which could melt the gel).

If you need to light something far away / quickly, there are incredibly powerful torches that give out minimal heat now, LEDs etc. There are LED microchip torches that chuck out a ridiculous amount of light, and I don't think, much heat - a company called Cree make some, though I'm sure there are plenty of others. You could also look for torches with focusable beams and adjustable output to give you more control.

As for how to do it, get something coloured, stick it over the end of the torch and point it at your subject...
 
What are you trying to do? If your trying to light something check out the led torches (as James says above) if your trying to get patterns many people like the old maglite with the 'candle' bulb (you take the end off) this give a bright-ish but not directional light.
 
I have been meaning to ask something similar actually. I guess what you need is a torch with variable beam angle (if thats the right word).

I want to add light in many areas around this compound but do not have enough flash. Plus I like the idea of seeing how the light will look before I take the shot as opposed to after.
