Hi all,

Have just recently taken up photography over the past few months and rallying and other motorsprt stuff is my thing but im not sure which lens to start off with! I have a canon 1000d with the 18-55mm lens a friend advised me to get the 55-250mm one. He also said to ask the lovely people on here! so has anyone any advice???? oh and my price range is in and around £500. Many thanks in advance!

well having just brought a 55-250mm IS lens myself - you should be able to get a much better lens for £500.

id rather not spend all my £500 if you know what I mean, keep whats left of it to put towards another lens. But thanks for your reply!

well - like you i've got a 1000D and 18-55mm Lens, so i thought the 55-250mm IS lens would be a good addition. :)

Also they seem to hold there value pretty well - so if i am to upgrade later, i should get most of my money back.

Im thinking of along those lines myself! rallying has always been a hobby and I love to take photos so Ive decided to put the 2 together! so far its going good but Id like to build up my lens kit etc! think il def go the 55-250mm just looking for someone to make my mind up for me! :L

what about a second hand 70-200 f/4 NON IS, should be able to pick one up in the region of £375-£425

cracking lens, the only reason i went for the 2.8 over it was that i need low light capabilty

There is a 70-300 IS for sale in the classifieds. I wanted a new one so just ordered one for a good price from kerso. (350)

One of the guys at work has one and loves it for the price.

Its reasonable weight which I wanted

Cheers

For fast-moving subjects you want to be able to achieve the highest shutter speeds you can get. With £500 you could probably afford one of the f/2.8 tele zooms (either new or second hand):

Canon 70 200 f/2.8 non IS (probably bit more than £500)
Sigma 70 200 f/2.8

The 55 250 is f/5.6 by the time you zoom to 200mm. With one of the zooms above you would get a shutter speed that is 4 times faster at f/2.8 and at 200mm as compared to the 55 250.

Another option you could afford is the:

Canon EF 70 200 f/4.0 non IS or the
Sigma 100 300 f/4.0 (one was sold on TP this week for £375 but that was a bargain IMO)

With one of these f/4.0 zooms you would get a shutter speed that is twice as fast at 200mm and at f/4.0 (or even 300mm in case of the Sigma) compared to the 55 250.

The 55 250 is still a good option though if you shoot in good light and you would like to get more experience before you buy more expensive lenses.

70-200 2.8 is awesome, i really love this lens. You might get an older example for about £600.

cheaper alternative as mentioned is the sigma 70-200mm f2.8

If you want a rally lens, forget about the 55-250mm, there are better lenses out there. Light becomes a major issue, and a slow lens won't cut the mustard. I would recommend you look out for a canon 70-200mm f4, used 70-200mm f2.8 non IS or sigma 70-200mm f2.8 for rallying as you can get quite close to the action without having too many obstructions in the way of the cars. An alternative would be a sigma 100-300mm f4 as mentioned above. You'll have more options if you looked at the 2nd hand market, check out ffordes, mifsuds, park camera's, camtech, mpb or the for sale forum on TP.

ffordes sigma 70-200mm f2.8 £559 mint
mifsuds canon 70-200mm f4 £459 or sigma 70-200mm f2.8 £469 or sigma 100-300mm f4 £599

ignore the bit about high shutter speeds with motorsport, you don't really want to be shooting above 1/320, and unless your in a well covered dark wood that should be achievable at iso 400 f/5.6
