So I have a friend who's recently opened her own vintage clothing store online. There's a selection of scarves that she'll be selling and has asked myself to take photographs for use on the website, the scarves are more polyester than cotton.

Basically, I'd like to get anyone's input on how I could shoot the scarves outside of the norm, preferably without the use of models and manakins.

Tied together hanging out of a 1st floor window as if a rope.
Flapping out of a car window.
On a bed.
Worn as a belt, sorry model required but it could be done as a self portrait just showing the waste.
Thrown in the air, blue sky required I guess!

Pegged on a washing line and blowing in the wind?

Nice idea.. would work really well with the vintage theme if you could find one of the old communal drying greens, there's one down by the banks of the Allan in Dunblane, I'm sure there must be some around Fife.

Scarves around cows? Mmmmmm, I'm not sure that most cows are quite as cooperative as those in the Anchor butter ads.

Scarves on cows. Thats pure brilliance. You deserve an award or something :1st:

Don't know if it helps but my first ever paid job 2 weeks into owning my first 20D was for a friend that also did vintage stuff (I got £20 for it!). I ended up taking a box of pashminas, belts, gloves and stuff to a vintage car club meet and getting shots of it in some classy vintage motors. Pashmina laying across some nicely aged leather seats in an Austin Healey, some gloves next to stainless gearshift gate on an old Ferrari and a belt in the glove cuddy bit in an old Morgan. The only one that baffled me was a fur muff thing. You'll find if you go on a forum or club site someone will be near to you and will probably be happy for you to use the car as a prop for a couple of facebook grade shots.

I always wanted her to get an old Irvin flying jacket that I could use a Spitfire as prop for but she moved to Canada instead :(

I'd stick with the vintage theme. is there a WW2 museum near you at all? I'm sure they'd jump at the chance of some extra publicity of being names on a website etc and you could hang the scarves off of planes etc.

I see a scarf, end shut in the canopy, and blowing backward (you'd need a fan obviously!!)

It's almost Christmas (well, sort of)... how about decorating a Crimbo tree with the scarves ?

I guess it's a bit seasonal, but would give you a couple of months to come up with something else ;)

A discarded scarf left on the side of an armchair whilst in the background a sheepskin rug in front of a glowing open coal fire?

or

On a coat hanger/hat stand in a vintage looking hallway.

By the way - scarves around cows!! absolute brilliance but a bit of a stretch lol. If you were in my local i'd buy you a pint just for that suggestion.

Get an old umbrella, take all the fabric off and hang the scarves from the spokes

Do we even know what these vintage scarves look like? Are they like the old brightly coloured hippy scarves from the 60's/70's? Like from the 80's? (Hey, it was still 30 years ago - would that count as vintage?) Or a little earlier? 40's?

Each one would lend itself to a different kind of shot to do it justice...

Thats a very good point. I think the hippy ones would go best with fresians and the more classic ones maybe on those hairy aberdeen angus ones?

I disagree... you could use the hippy ones to tie the aberdeen angus cows' hair into bunches to help keep it out of their eyes...
