Hi guys, i have a Netgear wireless modem, just recently it has decided NOT to let me log in to change settings.. when i used their recommended way be typing www.routerlogin.net which has always worked in the past its decided now to redirect me to the Netgear website!! iv also tried the ip thing 192.168.0.1 and still nothing..

Has anyone else had this problem? do you know if there is a hardware fault?

Have you tried to ping the router using the 192.168.0.1 ip?

I normally open up the web browser and type in http:\192.168.0.1 to get the router login screen. I have a netgear DG834GTv2.
 
Yep, i tried that too.. nothing.. it just times out..
 
What model is the router?

Do you have any specific settings (like firewall setting or port forwarding)?

Do you have a back up of the router?

What is your computers IP configuration?

Open up a windows command line (run->cmd) and run ipconfig

Yoiu will get something that looks like:

IPv4 Address. . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.24
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1

The default gateway ios what youre PC thinks is the router. You should put that into the ping/browser (so in my case, it would be http://192.168.1.1)
 
the router is a WNR3500v2

and im running a mac, so no command line asaik..
 
To get that info on a new mac (not sure about older ones), open up finder, go to applications -> utilities and launch "Terminal". Type in "netstat -rn" and you'll get a big table of information, top line in this table will have a destination of "default" and the next column is your routers IP address.

Iv tried HTTP://127.0.0.1 and nothing..

Maybe i need a new router?? can anyone recommend one? these things just dont last...

If i pressed the reset button on the back, will it change the wireless key too??
 
Prob silly question, but have you powered it off and on again?

And yes, a factory reset will probably change your wireless settings.
 
Before you reset it have you tried connecting to the router with a Cat 5 cable rather than wireless?
 
Are you connecting via wireless to it? If it has ports on the back have you tried using a cable? No wireless security to worry about then.

As mentioned, always try to access via ethernet when dealing with a router that is reluctant to play. The default IP for that model is 192.168.1.1.

Try pinging that, and try some other combinations as well. If no luck, then reset it and try 192.168.1.1 again. If it still doesn't come out to play, take a spade into the garden and dig a hole........
 
The pc is connected with a cable, and it still not working, and i dont want to re-set it because if it doesn't work i wont be able to get into the router to get the new wireless settings.. dilemma time i think!!

Did you turn it off and on again? You didn't say.

Reseting it is not going to any more harm than your current situation of not being able to administer it. Hold down the reset button for a few seconds whilst it is powered on, wait, then let it reboot. Once rebooted it will default to factory settings and yes may well lose any wireless setup, but then atleast you can go in and change it? Default will either be 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1, admin is th euser, and password will be either netgear, password, admin, or just blank.
 
Thats if it fixes the problem of not logging in!! if i cant im buggered..

Anyway, im going in!!

Ah but will it have the settings for his ADSL connection, I suspect not unless the ISP have put a config script of some sort into the firmware? I suppose it would only be as traumatic as calling a foreign call centre to get those settings again though.
 
Well if Frag hasn't made a backup copy of them, we won't be finding out for a while! :lol:

Now, which security should i be using? iv been using WEP but iv heard that its easily hacked these days...
 
WPA/PSK

although it depends what the devices you want to connect are capable of using.

oh, and well done :)

Before you set it all up might be worthing checking on the netgear website if there is a firmware update. Update the router, set it up and take a back up.

Right, all sorted and update!!

BUT!!!

Just before i hard re-set the router, i had a quick look in the Proxy settings on the computer, there was a tick in the WEB PROXY box only, so i trier it with a tick in AUTO PROXY too.. and guess what.. it worked.. now iv done the re-set i thought id see if it was that.. well.. it was! when i un-ticked the AUTO it went back to the same problem.. oh well.. i dont know how it got messed up in the first place! i dont ever go into those settings..
 
I STILL cant connect to the Linkstation!!!

Scan your PC (OK then Mac) for malware. They quite often muck about with the proxy settings.

In FINDER its listed, i just click on it and it opens with the different folders on it, now it just lists one folder called INFO but afaik there isnt one..

I know i added a proxy to my laptop as i couldnt access Loxley's site, but i dont think i did it to my main pc..
