Network Query

Until recently I had a 'home/office' network linking my laptop with two desktops, (all running Windows XP), a NAS with 2 x 500GB drives and a DVR (digital video recorder for CCTV).
The computers all run through a wired router/modem with an additional 4-port unit attached and all computers access the Internet via the router/modem.

Then came the change of laptop and the addition of Windows 7 Ultimate into the mix. From the new laptop I can 'ping' both desktops, view the DVR, access the router Admin and the NAS Admin and access the Internet but I have lost the network connection insofar as I cannot view the desktops or the NAS.
The desktops continue to access the Internet without issues and can view and work with each other, the DVR and the NAS.

I have tried the network setup wizard by using a USB drive created from one of the desktops but when attempting to configure it on the laptop it fails.

So, can I network XP PC's with a Win7 laptop?
If I can, what do I need to do?
TIA

What do you mean by "view". Do you mean see the disks? If so, you probably need to change your Win7 machine to be the same workgroup as the Xp machines. I'm not in front of my Win7 machine at the moment, but a quick google should bring up what you need to know...

 Although the workgroup had been correctly set and was showing as such, when I reset it and restarted ... everything appeared - happy bunny :)

Yeah! What is up with that? I can't get any of my W7 machines to "join" the homegroup

It takes about 5 mins or so to sort out the sharing after you have typed in your homegroup code.

If you mean W7 machines joining your present network, just change the workgroup name on the W7 machines to Mshome (or whatever you have called it).

to be honest i wouldnt touch homegroups, just set up simple file sharing with local users with the same credentials on each machine.

Aye, well it does it itself, Neil, a bit like the daily, weekly or monthly defrags Win7 comes with, for those non-fragmenting NTFS drives:)

Oh I'm still an Win 64XP man but my netbook and another PC I have just built for the wife are Win7.

They took a wee while to see Mshome initially but work fine and the homegroup doodah transfers OK at the moment.

I had a problem getting network connections a year or so ago but they seem to have improved things now.
