Neutral density filter for Nikon d7000

Hi all,

My partner has recently purchased a Nikon d7000 and I would like to buy him a ND filter for Xmas. Any recommendations? He's mentioned using one before for landscapes but I'm not sure which one to get him and obviously want it to be a surprise!

Hi Vikki.

ND filters come in screw in or slot in(as part of a kit) and they are used on lenses, not the camera alone. In addition they also come in differing strengths. Does your husband have a lens filter holder?

You may also find time too tight if you want one for Xmas day so make sure you have a back up plan :D.

How about a gift voucher or something for WEX, that way he can get the one he wants.
 
Are you sure it wasn't a Graduated ND filter?

And ND and Graduated ND are quite different, and the GND is more useful for Landscape pictures, but the ND can also be used. Best to get the right one. ;)
 
I think it was a graduated ND now you mention it!

He currently has the following lenses but don't think he has a lens filter hood;

10-20mm
18-105mm kit lens
70-200mm

I have purchased a couple of other presents already so this was a bit of a bonus gift, looks like a voucher could be the way forward though!

it should tell you the thread dia on the lens u want to get it for, my guess would be the 18-105 kit lens for landscape but i could be wrong. Find the thread Dia and get the GND filter for that size. If in doubt sneak the lens out the house and take it to a camera shop of some sort
 
I wouldnt buy a circular ND Grad. No control over where the graduation lies, without comprimising the composition, plus if the lens front element rotates when focusing, it could get pretty tedious.

Hmm..I'd advise buying the one for the 10-20mm (it's what I use for landscape anyway, but I don't do much landscape), I believe that's a 77mm filter thread, which means you can buy step-down rings to make sure he can also use it with the others, which have a smaller filter thread.

I am all in favour of circular ND-Grads because not only are good quality square filter systems pricey, they are also fiddly (however they look geeky and 'professional', which could be a plus).
