New camera body not supported by LR6.14

Hi,

I'm still using Lightroom 6.14, I also have Photolab Elite v5, which I currently use as a plug in to LR (in effect using it like PureRAW to preprocess my RAW files). I'm not really ready to completely move away from Lightroom, besides which there are some things that Photolab just doesn't do (eg photomerging).

I'm about to get hold of my new camera body - an Olympus OM1. I know that the RAW files from the OM1 will not be recognised by my version of Lightroom, but it can work with DNG files. So can anyone suggest a workflow which I can use with the software I already have, please?

I believe Adobe provide a free Raw to DNG converter to allow you to keep using LR 6.14. If you're an Amazon Prime member you can currently get a year of LR for £72 for the rest of today. Things have moved on rather a lot in the past 6 years since LR6

Thanks for the reply. LR will "copy to DNG" on import into LR but I'm not sure if that's what I need to do. I think Photolab needs a RAW file but I could be wrong. I'm sure there is an solution to this.

Unfortunately I refuse to shell out for the Adobe subscription model though. Maybe I'm spiting my nose (or whatever the saying is......)

Obviously your choice but if LR is what you use to process your images then that's the only way to continue using it. You're already running up against issues with LR6 with your new camera so you're going to have to either learn a totally new processing package or eventually subscribe. It's not like you're subscribing to a fixed product. It's constantly updated with new features. There was a huge update last month with adaptive presets, lots of new masking features etc and loads of upgrade to the mobile and iPad apps, the sort of thing you'd have had to shell out £100 for a totally new version to get a few years ago. Honestly don't understand the hate for the subscription model. It's a modest cost and it's regularly on sale on Amazon

Why not pre-process the om-1 raw files in PL5 and output them as 16 bit TIFFs for further work in LR ?

AFAIK if you pre process, using the free Adobe DNG convertor, to DNG, the DNG will not be recognised by PL5 Deep Prime......but not sure about that

"Cutting off my nose to spite my face" is I believe the saying I was looking for. I agree my decision does start to look a little ridiculous sometimes.

Thanks Laurence. It looks like I will have import the files into Photolab first then, and access them from there in future and not from Lightroom? Maybe the day has come to wean myself off LR. I'll have to look into whether Deep Prime will process a DNG file.

I must admit I usually do like the results I get from the "pre-processing" that Photolab / Pure RAW does. Sometimes I get a weird change in white balance but the noise reduction and sharpening is first class. And if all else fails you can sharpen the files again in LR!

This is exactly where I am. Presently use Adobe raw converter to make .dng files for import into LR. I also sometimes use on1 photoraw as a standalone. But converting to .dng works fine.

Same as ancient_mariner.
Use a Sony A7R IV and Lightroom 6 cannot open files from that (use it as my DAM) so I created a watch folder in L/R 6 (many YouTube vids for that) put my SD card into reader and open with the Adobe DNG converter (free from Adobe) tell it where to find files (ie SD card) and where to send (watch folder) when finish convert open L/R 6 and it will automatically import images, Make a folder named for that set of images and drag within L/R 6 across from the watch folder, sounds a lot of steps but once setup the only extra you need to do after a shoot is create a folder for that shoot. Then open from L/R to any external editor you want to use. Russ.

Pretty sure you can use olympus workspace to process your RAW files , where you go from there I’m not sure .. but that’s the logical starting point and obviously free to Olympus users

Once DeepPrime 2 has the OM1 added to it's database (might have already) it will convert the raw to a dng.
This can then be opened directly in LR 6.14 from DeepPrime
It's how I process any files that the perpetual version of LR doesn't handle, for example from my GX9

Only if you have a version of Lightroom that recognises raw files from your camera.
In your case you will need to download Adobe's free DNG converter and use it to convert your raws to DNGs outside of Lightroom. Then old versions of LR will read/import these DNGs.

Thanks for putting me straight on this.

Thanks to everyone for the other suggestions. I'm still working through them!

You’re welcome - been there, done that.

I had LR 6.14 which would not recognise my new camera and, like you, objected to Adobe‘s subscription model. Tried On1, Affinity and use of theDNG converter to continue using LR. With a modern computer the DNG conversion process is quick and painless, even with 1000 sports images but, IIRC, although the raw editors I tried were happy with converted DNGs, some specialist processing (I think DxO prime noise reduction) objected to converted DNGs rather than OOC raws - my memory might be letting me down, though.
In the end I decided I couldn’t live without LR’s DAM, and it seemed silly to spend thousands on gear, then object to £10 a month for convenient processing s/w. So I subscribed to AdobeCC.
FWIW I concluded that Affinity was a great substitute for PS, but the raw conversion modules was less flexible than LR/ACR. I found ON1 to be a good raw converter (and more) and you could use them conveniently as a package by converting the raw in ON1 and sending it to Affinity, as a plug in, for pixel level editing, returning it to ON1 when complete. No real DAM, though.

YMMV.

This is what the DXO website says about Photolab - compatible dng's. It isn't clear to me what "as long as the original RAW format is also supported in the program" means........

"DxO PhotoLab supports DNG format files, as long as they have been generated by Adobe Lightroom or Adobe DNG Converter, and as long as the original RAW format is also supported in the program. DxO PhotoLab will also accept DNG files created natively by supported cameras."

I've emailed them about it.

Hi, sorry but cannot understand why you are going round the houses if you already have L/R 6 and are using along with your Photolab software just setup as I mentioned above it takes less than 5 minutes and you are sorted to carry on with L/R 6 DNG files. Russ.

I think its because I'm not yet sure that Photolab - maybe just DeepPrime - will accept dng files created in this way.

I use On1 2022, Topaz products, Affinity Photo and on occasion Photoshop CS6 (P/S CS 6 also does not see Sony A7R IV files) try it what have you got to lose? 5 minutes of time.

I just import the raw straight into DeepPrime.
That processes and then converts into dng or jpg if you prefer.
Then I select open in Lightroom and edit as usual. I don't choose global sharpening preferring to do that myself.

I'm guessing that statement means if the latest cameras have been added to their database. Much the same as Adobe does with its programs. Think I saw that the OM1 will be added to DP in July.

Hi, I don't have any DXO software and find L/R 6 a good DAM option to work from as I said above the OP says he has L/R 6 and all he needs is the Adobe DNG converter without spending any money. Russ.

I know the dng converter can be used. If the OP wants to use a NR program, very handy with m4/3 this is an alternative way to go.

Yes, I've downloaded the dng converter;. Thanks for the suggestions. I'll have to try them out but the OM1 has just arrived so I'm overloaded with new "stuff" to get my head around at the moment.

I also read that the OM1 will be added to the DeepPrime database this month, so not long to wait now.
