Evening all, my lovely wife, god bless her, has said I can have a new camera but am unsure as what to buy? Already got the Nikon D40 with the standard 18-55 and I treated myself to the 55-200 VR lens so i'm leaning towards a Nikon. My budget is £500 and i'm considering the d3100 - anybody recommend anything else in the price range, I don't mind getting just the body? Thanks all, Dave.
 
With that sort of budget I would seriously consider 2nd hand.

The choice is get something plastic and new or a decent metal bodied 2nd hand cam for about the same price.
 
You've already got a couple of lenses, the D90 body only is about the price of your budget I believe.
 
I picked up a D90 from here and I'm really liking the pics I'm getting from it. You should be able to pick up a fairly new body for around your 500.
 
D90 should have better ISO performance than a D200 too.
 
A d200 or d2h(s) should get you going with the £500 budget, just make sure you check the equipment before passing over the cash, there some dogs sold, but also some bargains.....
 
Thanks again chaps, popped into local independent today who advised against a d3100 as he said it was essentially the same as the d40 body but with better picture quality. He would sell me a d90 body for £550 (£450 if traded in the d40 body). He said good luck re finding a D200 but there seem to be loads on ebay and am slightly worried I might get ripped off but would leave me some money for another lens - bit long winded but should I opt for D200 with a new lens or stick with the D90? Thanks, Dave.
 
There are a few D200's that come on here. I bought one last week, superb camera, worth looking around the TP for sale section and you would save £150 or more on your budget.

I'd recommend the D200 without hesitation, great camera, really built to last. I started with a D40 when they first came out then got my D200.

I'm considering a D2X as I prefer bigger bodies, but actually don't want to go FF
 
D200 is essentially the same body shell as a D300 so if you have a shop nearby, I'd advise to see how it feels to you in the hand. It's a lot more substantial in feel to a D40 and as always suggested, how a camera feels to hold and is equally important to how much tech it contains.

Anyway, a D200 us a good buy. Mpbphotographic have a fair few in for mid-£300s. Solid, pro build quality, excellent IQ and a very sensible button and menu layout. With a grip it's excellent, although slightly taller than a D2/D3 and not everyone's taste.

I started out in Nikon with a D200 (used Canon xxD before that) and I loved it. DPS mag spreads looked great from the raw files and the overall performance compared to the 30D I was using, was miles better. Noise above ISO 1000 can be an issue if you underexpose but it's nothing LR3 can't sort out. AF speed and accuracy is excellent too.

Guys, just been on the mpb website and they are selling one for 409.00 and says "Shutter actuations are extremely low at just 4735" - can I ask what might be a stupid question, but why is this important - will something need replacing the more it does?
