New Laptop Advice

The 5000 series laptops are from their Inspiron range, which are entry level consumer products and are decent no frills units for the money. Their XPS range are high end consumer laptops with higher specifications & features but tend to be considerably more expensive.

Their business products start with Vostro, then Latitude, followed by Precision which are high end workstation class laptops.

The more expensive products in the range tend to have higher resolution & better quality (IPS) screens, support bigger memory sizes, faster processors, separate Graphics engines etc . They tend to be offered with longer warranties including next business day onsite support if required.

What sets Dell apart from many vendors is their support website; there you will find relevant drivers, utilities, and manuals & a lot of other information about their products.

I’m looking for a laptop too so won’t start another thread about it, for general use and a wee bit photo editing so I can use it when watching telly instaead of in studio/office/ spare room, whatever it is now haha

Anyone dealt with this lot as see mixed reviews but look ok on trust pilot, i don’t know much about computers so is this decent?
Been looking at dell refurbished so not sure which way to go. Her indoors wants to go to Currys and pc world but I’m not keen , advice please
What's your budget?

What's your budget?
Not really got one, I’d rather buy good than buy cheap. Don’t need a gaming high end graphics, just a fast processor, decent memory and a nice screen for editing so I’m guessing 1k is ample. I can do more on credit card or finance but not sure I need it

This is probably over kill and with about 1 minute scanning recent deals on HotUKDeals but a decent spec and well under £1k, first hand.

That looks a decent machine to me, another on the list of maybes. Do you feel this is better than those mentioned above? I really find it a struggle to compare these things. Looking again, not sure I want touch screen and I think I’d prefer a bigger screen. Is touchscreen as good as an iPad

I’m open to all and any advice on this as it’s above my skill set so any input is appreciated
Does anyone have any real experience of the three year protection with them, it seems a good buy at £100 but only if they actually pick it up and return it fixed quickly

As others have said, Dell Outlet is also great (price without VAT)..

Was looking T that earlier, comes in at £977 with 3 years collect and return warranty. I asked earlier if anyone had experience of the warranty they give but no one replied. Seems a very good machine, probably more than I need but it should last a while and if the warranty is good I may well go for it. Anyone dealt with them?

I have two Dell Monitors, UP2716D premium colour and they come with a 3 year swap out warranty, to be honest I have never had to use the warranty as they have been rock solid and reliable. I know they are not laptops but if I was going to get a one I would definitely go for a Dell brand. As for the machine specced above do you really need that one with the graphics card, are you playing games on it if not save some money as a model without the card will be much cheaper and Photoshop / Lightroom would not see any advantage.

Personally I would get something like this from the Dell Outlet store with the latest processor, big fast SSD and you can stick anoth 8gig stick in as well as they have a spare slot.....and save a pot of money.

Guys, not sure if you are aware but all these businesses around online and on ebay selling high volumes of "refurbished" computers and laptops

they are not customer returns.

they are ex-business machines and tend to have been heavily used

Have just been up to Currys for a hands on look and they seem to have some good deals, interest free and a trade in with a great insurance package. I’m leaning toward this, any feedback would be good
https://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/compu...-7-laptop-512-gb-ssd-silver-10193332-pdt.html
The fix promise is if they can’t fix it in 7 days they replace it. Covers all breakages and it’s 6 months interest free and 150 quid trade in
Big question is, is it made of cheese or is it decent

do you realise that insurance package is ongoing, so you will be paying £9.49 each month that you have it (assuming you want to keep the warranty) that is one expensive deal if you ask me.

assume you keep it 12 x £9.49 = £113.88 per year multiply that by the years you keep it so if 3 years that is £341.64 extra on top of the original cost.

If you buy it it costs 189 for three years, around 60 per year isn’t bad for such a mobile and fragile thing
, I’ve been looking at a review and it says the screen isn’t great. Who knew a full had screen could be low quality? It’s all very confusing
Here’s the review, exactly what I didn’t want to see

Sorry just seen this, thanks for that input. What I thought would be an easy buy is turning into a headache

Have just been talking to dell support about the inspiron 15 7590 and assures me it will be great for my needs and gave me a code to apply for a discount of 14%, so hopefully that comes soon and I can buy it before I change my mind again haha
Thanks for all your help guys, not being very techy is a scary place to be when spending a few quid on a wee plastic box with wizardry and magic inside(y)

I wouldn't give PC World the time of day, never mind pay for their insurance .......

I have used DELL warranty support, but it was Next Business Day (NBD) warranty, that was excellent, We needed it maybe a handful of occasions on a 'fleet' of 300-400 laptops (School network).

I have also used Lenovo warranty, it was comparable to DELL but we preferred DELL systems as the spares were more readily available for out of warranty repairs and fixing laptops abused by ungrateful school children.

If screen quality is important to you for photo/video editing look for laptops with IPS screens.......

It's adequate. 16GB RAM would be better and you're definitely going to wish it had a bigger SSD, though you might be able to fit a second SSD inside the case - 1TB SATA drives now around £86-£95.

Thank you, its £550, do you think that is reasonable, or could you recommend something better.

OK, if you can bear the name, there's a really good value Medion for £430. Yes it's Aldi, but it has a Ryzen 5 3500 & 512GB SSD + space for a second M2 SSD under a panel. It womes with Windows 10S that can be upgraded FOC to W10. AFAIK Medion are a Lenovo brand.

If you want to stay with Dell (and I don't blame you) then how about a certified refurb G5-15 for £660? Broadly similar spec but faster processor, 128GB SSD & 1TB HDD to store images.

Processor speed comparison: https://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Intel-Core-i5-8300H-vs-AMD-Ryzen-5-2500U/m425634vsm378273 - they're both a bit old, but the intel should out-perform the AMD in the device you listed.

Or one similar to your listing for £449 from John Lewis:

Hi Ancient Mariner,

Would I be right in saying this will definitely be a good one Lenovo L340 15.6in i5 8GB 1TB 256GB GTX1650 Gaming

Link to the actual machine (spec vary a bit within model ranges)? FWIW we have a 530S here (wife's computer, bought last year for £450 IIRC) that's nicely made, faster than my 6YO XPS in terms of startup, opening applications etc. The screen is IPS but not as bright as it might be - I'd check that the model you're looking at has a quad core i5, IPS screen (see if you can find out what the colour gamut is). If that all looks OK then yes, it should be good.

This one? https://www.lenovo.com/gb/en/laptops/ideapad/l-series/IdeaPad-L340-15IRH-Gaming/p/88IPL301161

Performance should be good - screen has a narrower colour gamut so not completely ideal for image editing.

I cant find the colour gamut, but this model appears to have a TN screen, is that Hong to be an issue?
