New Lens Choices

Hi folks,


I currently have a Nikon D90 with the standard kit lens, 35mm prime and 55-200mm. I shoot mostly landscape and enjoy talking pictures while hill climbing/mountaineering. During the winter I hope to get some mountaineering photos which capture the scale of the mountains v the climber and hope to get some personal, almost documentary style shots.

My plans for years has been to upgrade the kit lens with a Tamron 17-50mm 2.8, but now I'm wondering if wide angle would be better, such as a Tokina 11-16 or similar.

I hardly ever use the 55-200mm these days and I find the kit lens very soft and just generally by its best.

I'm hoping someone can offer some advice to which would the best option.

Steven, if you mostly shoot landscapes you don't need need a fast lens and f.2.8 is plenty good. Your shooting will ideally be done at f8 - f.11.

Wide angle sounds very good for you, so the Tokina 11 -16 mm very useful.

The reason I was looking at a fast lens was in order to shoot handheld in low light conditions (I wouldn't be carrying a tripod up a mountain) and figured it would be handy for sunrise/sunset shots.

I'll defend my two-lens walk-about choice any time... but if Nikon comes up with a 12-85 f/4, they're out!

And when they are not around, tripod...
