I'm in the market for a couple of new lenses. Currently I've only got the Nikon 18-55mm kit lens and the Tamron 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 XR Di II. I'd like a fixed focal length lens and a telephoto lens. I saw the Nikon 50mm f/1.8 D AF and the Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 DG Macro. Both are relatively inexpensive and I was wondering if that showed in the results from them?

Hi there Nikon 50mm f/1.8 D AF won't auto focus on your D40
use the search facility and you can read all about it

I knew it wouldn't auto-focus, but I never use auto-focus anyways so it's not much of a problem. I'm looking to upgrade to a D90 at some point anyways.

if you get the Sigma I suggest the APO version "here" as it's better glass I read

if you fancy a bit of fun time wasting, surf around here and eBay for an earlier 50mm [which will focus on your D90]

I got a Nikkor 50mm f2 here for £35 - in VG condition too

"Nikon's Nikkor 50mm standard / normal lenses" - lots of info "here"

I'm not really a fan of eBay. I prefer to buy stuff from a store. Call me paranoid, but I just don't like to count on other people when it comes to large amounts of money.

true - but the on-line shop OneStopDigital is one of the few with good feedback . I think they also do a 50mm 1.8 D for £89

you might consider the 35mm 1.8 AF-S DX - about double the price, but a more useful focal length IMO - I sold mine ----:bang::bang:

you may have to wait a few weeks - and they are grey imports from HK I think - but so what - not much goes wrong in the first year anyway ?

I did look at the 35mm, but I think for the price the 50mm is the better option. Also, is 35mm really much better than 500mm? I know that 35 is effectively what the human eye sees, which is why I preferred the idea of the 50...

well you've two lenses which cover both 35 and 50mm - set up some controlled situation test shots and see which focal length you prefer

the kit lens is not bad -- so unless you NEED 1.8 [indoors?].... is a prime needed
I went your route then found i just didn't use the 35mm at all - no low light stuff
but wanted to do some macro stuff with tubes so I got a cheap 50mm f2 AI
