Sorry as a learner which will I be able to zoom in further with: a Sigma 70-200mm f2.8 lens or my existing 55-250mm f4-5.6 ?

Contemplating on buying one the Sigma ?? Thank you.

Hello Phil

Your current 55-250 will give you more reach, 250 being the operative term here. I'm not familiar with the 55-250 but since it covers the range of the Sigma, you could check out the zoom range of the Sigma on your 55-250. The Sigma at f2.8 gives you that added level of low light use while the wides the Canon goes to is f4.0.

Thanks for that I currently have a cannon 55-250mm. Its for football at night under floodlights ideally dont want to loose any zoom but believe I need f2.8 to have any chance
 
If you buy the Sigma you can buy a 1.4x or 2x teleconverter and extend the zoom to either 280mm or 400mm
 
Ignore that last post you will lose the f2.8 with the teleconverter and you will need the wide aperture.
 
Hi Phil, unfortunately there isn't really an easy fix. The 70-200 2.8 with a 1.4x TC giving you 280mm at f4 and upping the ISO is maybe the cheapest option. That'll give you as much light on the long end as you have on the short end of your 55-250. Other than that there's a 100-400 L that'll give you the reach but not the low light you need, or a 300 f4 L which might not be long enough or fast enough, but they wont leave you much out of a grand.
 
I think the sigma 120-300 2.8 is probably the cheapest option for this. It's cheaper than a 300 prime, and you get the zoom but it's not inexpensive and they're sought after second hand too.
