New Nikon 24-120 F4 first pic

All this has had done is a crop (ie. straight from camera).
No colour, contrast or sharpening done to it.
Photographed at F4, 120mm 40th second exposure using VR and SB900 bounce flash. Focus on the dogs left eye.

When did you get yours?
If this had been available/I'd known about it a month or so ago I might have considered it instead of the 24-70 f2.8 af-s g that I bought, 24-120 is a nice range but I had an old 24-120mm af-d, it was meant to be better than the newer 24-120mm f3.5-5.6 G AF-S VR IF-ED but it was rubbish, soft as a pillow and wild distortion.

I got it yesterday - just come out. I'm planning after a little more playing to use it as my main lens at weddings, haven't done enough to really look at image quality yet and compare. The 24-70 f2.8 is nice but this gives me a little more flexability without the need to lug my 70-200 around all the time (although it will be in the car with my second body just in case obviously) and I very rarely shoot at 2.8 anyway with the high ISO ability of the D700 being as good as it is.

Pros: Isn't heavy, extra reach to 120mm, VR.
Cons: Not built as well as the 24-70mm but wasn't really expecting it to have been! Not as fast!

Huh, both lenses goto 24mm so neither is wider or am I missing something?

I enjoyed the extra reach that the 24-120 af-d had, especially at weddings, but the iq just didn't cut it.

Martinh32, you say not as well built as the 24-70 2.8 but there have been some nasty rumours circulating about the build quality/strength of those.

I think the new 24-120 has a little more plastic to it than the 24-70! My 24-70 feels quiet meaty (if that's the right word for it) in comparison. As far as image quality is concerned, I've never found my 24-70 to be as stunning as some people make out.

Aperture controls the DOF, so an F2.8 should throw the background out of focus more than an F4 even when both are set at the same focal length as it has a shallower DOF.

Yup, true, think I mis-interperated what was originally said! I was on about angle of view not DOF

I miss the 24-105 IS i had on Canon which i liked more than the 24-70, maybe i will hire this for a weekend and see if i should use it as a walk about lens.
 
Cracking shot and the lens is no slouch ... love mine
 
What's the build quality on the24-120 like compared to the 24-70?
Distortion at the wide end about the same between the 2?
Really considering doing the swap but when I bought my 24-70 I took out a 3year breakdown/accidental damage cover on it and not sure if I'd be able to swap it to a different lens.
 
Hmmmmmmmmm! Not so sure i could part with my Nikkor 24-70 f2.8 for one, but does look like a good zoom range, plus the added advantage of VR on there. Pity the couldn't make it a 2.8 instead of a 4!
 
I've got a 24-120 f4 on loan for a week from Nikon to test out. I've not had a chance to use it yet but it is quite chunky feeling with a good weight and initial snapshots seemed qok. I'll take some proper images with it over the coming days. Only thing that I really hate about it from initial impressions is the way it extends when zoomed. Dread to think what might get sucked in to the lens over years of ownership!
 
Must admit, after not really seeing much point to this lens as a 24-70 owner, I'm now considering selling up and buying one.
 
Just to bring a thread back to life.

Does anyone have any further opinions of this lens?

The photo at the top I cannot see so is there anymore examples. 'When i buy the D700' Im thinking of getting this lens over the 24-70 for the extra reach it has.

I did notice Simon (spxxx) says further up this thread that he loves his, but I believe he has now sold it - probably significant!
I have to admit that I really wanted that lens for the range, not so sure now.
 
Yeah I did see on another thread about him selling it but I couldn't find a reason why!!

Might have to do another search.
 
Any images available, straight out of camera, for this 24-120, portraits etc?
 
I got this lens on Thursday. So far I'm impressed. It focuses fast and seems sharp. I've not really taken any decent shots yet only messed about with it. When I take sone I'll try and send you a RAW file. It probably won't be a portrait photo though.

Thank you. I have a 17-55 2.8 nikon, i use a D300, i would like a little furthur reach. The 70-200 is a good lens but i can't go to all that dosh. I have the 18-200 mark 1 also.
Just keeping my options open, but it is mainly people i shoot.

If you look at my Flickr (in my sig) all the photos taken of the motor racing were taken with the 24-120. Have a look through and if there are any ones you would like to see the RAW file of just let me know and i'll send it across.
