looking to buy editing software for my partners birthday any ideas plz

Well, realistically it's £50 or so for Elements 9, £90 for Elements 10 or £600 for the full Photoshop. Personally E9 is more than enough for me, that said I do 99% of my editing in Lightroom.

Just showing up my novicenish here, but I just use DPP at the moment. I always shoot in RAW, then tweak in DPP and convert to JPEG. That seems to give me just about everything I want to do; I can straighten, crop, change saturation, colour temperature and do a bit of noise reduction, as well a use curves. I have, I feel, a fairly good organisational struture to my photos in the standard windows programme.

I have heard people say Lightroom is good. What extra would I be likely to get from it that would give it the "I don't know how I lived without that" factor?

This may seem like I'm jumping on the back of this thread, but I'm sure the answer would benefit the OP as well.

Part of the reason for asking this now is because the OH currently has student status after studying for an MA, although that will be going soon!

Try the 30day free trial and see how you get on with it.

It has lots of features and many advantages over other programmes

^^^ Yes :)

Think a Student version of Lightroom 3 can be had for around £70 from Amazon as opposed to the normal £200 - if your OH still has student credentials would really recommend going for this - very quick to do most things and very effective at it too.

As others have said, download the 30 day free trial then go for a Student licence. BTW student licence is fully functional - no limitation vs the main licence

Thanks for the replies (sorry again to the OP for the thread hijack). Running out of hard drive space on the computer at the moment and need to tidy it up before I put more stuff on it. May give the free trial a go though.

GIMP is free and as good as any elements program.
