hey, im new to photography, i want to get a camera now, one that will take some great shots.
is a cannon 400d or 350d good for a beginner? thanks

Hi & welcome to the forum

Get yourself down to your local Jessops or similar camera shop and try a few out. Check how comfortable the camera feels in the hand and how easy it feels to navigate the menus. Read every review of each camera brand you can too, for future-proofing your choice.

When you buy your first camera, you are usually subscribing to that brand as once you start buying lenses and accessories, it becomes very expensive to change at a later date.

Getting it right at the start can save a great deal of heartache later on ;)

A 350D or 400D would be a good body to start off with.
As teh above Gary said, go into your local camera store and try some out.
But, I must add that it is more down to the photographer in taking great shots, not the camera. You could go out and buy a pro camera for several thousand and end up with the same shots as a much cheaper body (generally speaking).

As above any of the DSLR cameras on the market. from cheapest to most expensive can take good shots, it is your eye and mind however that make them great.

Go and handle bodies at shops and see which feel most comfortable for you to hold. See which control layout feels most intuitive to you.

Bear in mind the size of the body tends to be larger the more you spend.

Get hold of a copy of "Understanding Exposure" by Bryan Peterson you will find it useful.

If you are going to take portraits see how the camera feels on it's side. Consider a vertical grip.

By all means read reviews, remember though, the result is only the opinion of the reviewer.

Above all have fun and ask questions.

Welcome to TP:)

I started on the SLR digital route with a 400D and it is a great camera and wont do you wrong. As I felt like I was getting better and wanted to do more and more I felt I outgrew the camera so upgraded to a 40D and still keep the trusty 400D as the spare. Took two years to outgrow it though!

Even the stock lens is not bad, but you'll find that will be the first thing you'll look to change. Some good bargains on a 400D to be had on the classifieds.

Hi & Welcome

Can't go wrong really with either of these, would poss go for the 400 if pennies allow, might be worth stretching a bit to the newer 450 if you can.

Agree with above advice to try different models if you can, but enjoy whichever you choose

I had my 350D until I upgraded recently to the 450D.

If you look at my gallery you'll see the kind of pics you can take with this camera.

You can also buy it second-hand quite cheaply, especially if you look on here.

My first DSLR was the 400D which my wife has now stolen so i've just bought a 50D. The "Understanding Exposure" book can't be recommended highly enough by me which i see another member has already pointed you in the direction of and was where i was pointed to when first starting out.
