There are lots of tutorials available on the net and plenty of videos on YouTube about lighting, but it's so easy to get lost or confused by conflicting ideas and people's different opinions on the way to do things.
I accidentally found this video (whilst looking for something else) that will start you at the very beginning and introduce you to the basics of how it all works; lights, modifiers etc. It's a bit of a long slog, but worth watching IMHO if you're a beginner and new to it all.
