I want to buy a flash for my canon 50d with an unlimited budget. I want a flash I that gets connected to the top of the camera and is easy to carry around.

any suggestions?

Canon 580EXII. £300. It doesn't come any better than that.

Since I am going to buy that, is there anything else I should consider buying to save some money on one of these amazon deals.

p.s. where is the cheapest place to buy stuff. I have been buying from either amazon or warehouseexpress...

as a newbie, i purchased the jessops flash....

for the work i do, my mini was far cheaper than the ferrari's out there.

Do it right, first time.

Check the price with Kerso first.

The sto-fen is useful for bouncing off multiple surfaces, e.g. if you are inside and have white walls + white ceiling to bounce off, it will make the shadows softer.

Edit: beaten to it with the CPB link!

Amazon and WEX are good. Also check CameraPriceBuster for best prices http://www.camerapricebuster.co.uk/cat3.html

Stofens work very well, in the right situation. Like most attachments, they work by distributing the light from the flash all around, mainly up to the ceiling. It is the light reflected back from the surroundings that creates the softening effect, not the Stofen directly - bear that in mind. You get a very similar effect just using the hi-lite panel that pulls out from the head.

I would get to know the flash by itself for starters. It's a very capable gun and does lots of things. Be sure to read the handbook thoroughly and learn how E-TTL flash works.

Maybe get an off-camera sync cord, which gives you full control with the flash moved away from the camera, for better-looking shadows.

Next up, get another 580 or a 430EXII (cheaper) and use that as a remote unit for different effects. Your 580 will act as a master controller unit.

The most important thing with flash is to learn how light works and how to control it :)

if no one has mentioned it already, get a set of wireless flash triggers from ebay.. and get in touch with lee filters and ask them for one of their colour gel swatchs
