newbie lens help, for nikon d40

i want to get a lens that will give me a low f-stop so i can get some good close up pics,

sadly i have a small budget and all the len's i see are going to mean i have to use manual focus.

heres my list:

nikon 50mm f1.8 £75

SIGMA AF 28-70mm F2.8/4 D £55

Nikon 28mm f3.5 Ai Lens Nikkor £90

i think im happy to use mf but which will give me the best results or broder range?

or should i be looking to spend money else where
 
I think you are confused. A low f-stop has nothing to do with how close you can get. The f-stop is the size of the aperture and how much light the lens lets in.

For close focusing you need a macro lens.
 
In that case the Nikon 50mm.

The Sigma is f/4 at 70mm , so no good and the other Nikon is pretty old and not all that fast.

The 50mm is the best value and sharpest lens you can buy for under £100
 
no be carful mate, you need AFs Dx leses for the D40, to retain autofocus
You can get the 35mm 1.8 for £140,
 
He said he's happy to use manual focus, so still the 50mm f/1.8 from that list.
 
im happy to loose the auto focus feature, i had swayed towards the 50mm
