Okay, so I'm a newbie and wondered which lenses are compatible with a D700? Specifically, are AF-D lenses compatible or not?

Yes they are. The d700 has a built in motor.
The only thing to be aware of is DX lenses will either vignette or force the camera into the 5MP DX mode.

The D700 is a full frame camera, therefore needs lenses designed to work with such. Pretty much all AF-D lenses are FX lenses (might even be all of them, but I havent checked), but if you see DX in the title, then just remember the lens will either vignette (cause big dark areas in the corners of the image) or the D700 has a DX mode, where its crops the image in camera automaticly to remove the vignette, but in doing so reduces the image quality to 5 Mp instead of the usual 12Mp.
