Newbie question on lens protector / filter

Hi all - OK, got my D40X with "Nikon AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G ED II" and "Sigma 55-200mm F4-5.6 DC HSM" lenses. I'm reading that I should use lens protectors to avoid getting the lenses dirty - correct, yes?

All the lens protectors I've seen so far appear to be "filters". So, I have a couple of questions:

1. Will *any* 52mm threaded filter / protector fit my chosen lenses?
2. What's the best type of filter to buy for general use while I learn about DSLR photography? UV, or ... ?

I guess I might be able to answer these questions myself once I've read all the documentation for my camera and lenses, but I'd like to be prepared before I start heading outdoors with the camera :)

Thanks in advance for any help or advice!

Cheers

Mike

Already confirmed this, thanks - 52mm UV good for the Nikon lens, 55mm UV good for the Sigma.

Have purchased a couple of Hoya filters in the correct sizes :)

Cheers

UV filters are also for stopping glare ruining your photos. Most people use them for protection aswel.

Hoya do good filters, I have one on my 17-40 L and it works great.
