I'm looking to upgrade our video cameras (we currently use higher end consumer Canons to produce training DVDs and video for the web). I was recommended the 7D by a pro videographer but he does a lot of music videos and TV productions so I'm not sure if the 7D's is overkill for us.
Our videos are fairly basic (in terms of camera work) and much more about content than style. For example, we might film an illustrator over her shoulder with just a bit of manual zooming in an out and very little panning.
Couple of specific questions...
- Does the 7D have a lanc jack? Ideally we need a way to remotely control the zoom/focus if the camera is on a high tripod or mini jib. If not, are there any other solutions? Or is the 7D's zoom control (rocker switch?) fairly responsive? The zoom on our consumer cameras is too jerky and you get a lot of camera movement from the operator.
- We currently use a Sennheiser wireless clip mic system that hot shoes on to our camcorders. Will this be compatible with the 7D? If not is there any other straightforward way to capture video and audio together? I appreciate the pros capture audio separately but I'm trying to keep costs and post production workload down.
