Hi All
Ok after doing a lot of reading on this forum and some very helpful advice from you guys and gals on here I think this is what I am going to buy. Nikon d90,Nikon lenses 18x55 vr and a 70x300 vr, tripod Redsnapper, Sandisc (need help with size and class please.) The Tom Hogan d90 book. If there is anything you think I have missed please tell me,or if I should make any changes please help.

I used the sandisk extreme 4GB with my D90. I had two of them, incase one packed up. I'd rather have two smaller ones than one big one.
I now use Sandisk Ultra 8GB in my D700, purely because 4GB isnt really big enough for a D700.

You might want a spare battery so you can always have one on charge and one in the camera.
Apart from that, I think you are set.
 
Looks like a sensible list but also get a lenspen.

Also, I wouldn't be overly concerned about the brand of memory card, any known brand will be fine.
 
Thanks for the replies. With the memory card what class do i go for ? (not sure what it means) Also I am going to buy new so where would be the best place to buy from.

What about a bag? And did you mention a tripod head? (Sorry. On phone so can't check back while replying).
 
A camera bag/rucksack would be useful and as for memory cards, I have used these before without any problems,http://www.mymemory.co.uk/ I have used the Kingston ones and they have never missed a beat. Just be careful about getting memory off the Dreaded Bay, lots of fakes on there.
 
Don't buy everything in one go. Get the camera, lens, memory card and a bag to put it all in.

Do you really need the book? My D80 did not come with the manual as it was second hand and I bought a D80 field guide which did not really help.

Get the camera and have a play with it. Ask questions in the forum and refer to the manual to get used to the camera.

A book I found useful was understanding exposure. Depending on your level might be worth investing in this book.

Thanks very much again for the help and advice. I had thought about the camera bag and the tripod head but forgot to mention it :shake: At least i mentioned the most important bits the camera and lenses:lol:

heyyyy! 7dayshop.co.uk have really good prices for memory cards! could also pick yourself up a lens hood, cleaning products, cases etc all at pretty good prices (lol sound like i work for them) Ive used them for years, for various different things, good service if you ask me =]
 
A lot of d90 kits come with the 18-105vr lens for not much more than the 18-55vr kit.
I have both lenses and the 18-105vr is a much better lens plus you would not have a gap between 55 and 70

So do you experts think it would be better for me to get the

Nikon 18-105mm f3.5-5.6G ED VR AF-S DX and
Nikon 70-300mm f4.5-5.6G IF-ED AF-S VR
so I don't have the gap between 55 and 70 Sorry to be a pain but I would rather get the correct lenses first than spending money later changing them or do I just forget the budget and go for the Nikon 16-85mm f3.5-5.6G ED VR AF-S DX NIKKOR and does the price difference really make the 16-85mm so much better than the 18x55 or the 18-105mm

I'd go for the 18-105mm instead of the 18-55mm. It's not just that you lose the gap between 55 and 70mm but it's much more useful if you only want to take one lens. TBH you probably won't notice much difference optically between the 16-85mm and 18-105mm on a D90.

Personally, I go for Sandisk class 6 or class 10 cards as they always greatly exceed the minimum for the class rating. You may not notice it while you're taking the photo's but you will when you download them to your PC (assuming you're using a card reader rather than the camera). If you want cheaper than Sandisk then make sure you get cards with at least 133x speed rating (20MB/s). As chri23 mentioned, 7dayshop has some very good prices on memory cards.

I totally agree with the 18-105 over the 18-55!
Also I have only used sandisk cards for the last five years and now use the ultra 4gb in my D90. Prior to that I had a bad experience with a generic CF card so decided the little bit of additional expense was worth it!
 
If you are going to be spending that much, why not see if he shop will do you a deal, ask if they will throw in a memory card or bag etc.
As long as you are in the frame of mind to haggle a bit, I am sure you could get a deal. The shops wan your money and think they would rather give you something free than risk losing a sale especially as you are buying quite a bit of equipment.

Make sure and buy your memory cards from a reputable supplier, don't get them from Ebay, too many fakes floating about on there........

Fine choices. the 18-105 is a nice lens. Good range and much better built than the 18-55 (which is also a decent lens btw). The biggest advantage the 18-105 has over the 18-55 is that the front lens element doesn't rotate. In practical terms this means that you can use polarising filters and graduated filters. On an 18-55 it would be tricky at best.

The 70-300 VR is a lovely thing. I bought one last week and have been enjoying it ever since. Really sharp below 200mm and pretty good beyond that. The VR can be helpful as well.

In terms of a bag, I find a rucksack most useful. Partly as its easy to carry long distances but also because they often look less obviously like a camera bag. The disadvantage is that they're are harder to access quickly although Lowepro do some nifty one that swing around your side when you wish to get your camera out.
