Next lens recomendations

I've just bought myself a canon 1000d and am new to dslr , the lens that came with it usable but i'm looking to get myself a longer lens perhaps a 300 mm zoom my budget will be around £150.00 I hope to use it for wildlife and maybe sports but I'm also looking for something for portraits would the long lens really help, any advice would be greatly appreciated, Harvey

I've used this lens for most of my wildlife photography for about two and a half years now. It is an excellent lens for the price and is very highly thought of by the TPers who have used it.

There's a guy named Kerso who sells lenses though TP. He should be able to give you a good price on one. I've not used him myself but he is very highly regarded hereabouts.

Would you mind posting one of your wild life pictures with a note of how far away you were stood - I'm trying to get my head around the reach I'd get from a 250 or even a 300 as I'm in a similar situation to the OP.

I tried posting some photos today but got a file size error, despite them being only 800 pixels wide. I would suggest you do a search on the lens, within the TP forums, and you should get quite a bit of material to chew on.

One of the photos I wanted to upload showed a three month old red panda cub from a distance of about 10-20 feet, the other showed a family of elephants, taken from a distance of about 100 yards. How much effective reach you get depends very much on the size of the animal.

If you can afford it, I would suggest you look at the new Tamron 70-300mm. This has had uniformly good reviews, many rating it the equal or close equal of the new Nikon. The Canon 70-300 IS (non L) is now a very old design and is beginning to show its age. Digital Photo magazine recently did a comparative review of 70-300 lenses, ranking them thus:

1) The new Nikon
2) The new Tamron
3) Sigma
4) Canon

The best of the lot is probably the new Canon 70-300 L range lens but, since this has a street price of around £1100-1200, it's beyond the reach of most photographers.
