Nifty Fifty for Olympus

I want to buy a friend a birthday present and he has an Olympus camera, a regular dSLR, I believe, not a micro 4/3s. I thought of buying him a fast prime lens, a nifty fifty equivalent so something in the 20 to 40mm in focal range to account for the crop factor.

The only one I can find is this one, the Olympus 45mm f1.8 ZUIKO, which is a bit long and is micro 4/3rds.

1. Can you use micro 4/3 lenses on 4/3 camera?

2. Is there a better alternative in that sort of budget (sub £250)?

This page should give you some idea what's in production for 4/3 cameras, but you'd need to check around to see who stocks what, and for how much.

Your best option would be a Leica 25mm f1.4 Sumilux, but it won't come in your budget! :naughty:

The 25mm is no better than using the 14-42mm at 25mm, except for being a stop faster and obviously smaller.
 
Nope - only works the other way round with the appropriate adapter.

Indeed primes have been a bugbear of Olympus owners for some time. While they have excellent zooms, the SHG constant aperture glass being so good it performs similar to having many primes, they don't really do many primes. While the fore mentioned SHG zoom = multiple primes may well be true (never got my hands on one to try) it certainly is not a cheap avenue to go down.

I can understand why there is no m43 to 4/3 adaptor though. Until now the m43 lenses have been of a poorer standard to 4/3 lenses so the effort has been to get the 4/3 lenses working on m43 - and they have pretty much given up on that too. The SWD lenses are rubbish at CDAF and it looks like they will stay that way.

One mount - two different systems. Not their plan I assume but the reality, currently.

Thanks for the info, so what do you get the guy who wants to upgrade from the kit lens for a reasonable cost?
 
The 50 is a perfect portrait lens, although its very sharp and high resolving so better practice the skin smoothing!

Indeed it is, and is the lens I use most for portraits but at £577.99 compared to £209 it may be a bit much for Pete though I might be willing to part with mine for £370.;)

I had the Metz Mecablitz I think it was the AF48 - better than the Olympus FL-36 not quite as good as the FL-50 - but no where near the price.
Worked fantastic, TTL never missed on my E510
