Does anyone else find that the Canon f/ 1.8 is a complete wate of time when used at maximum aperture - way too soft - or do I just have a bad copy? I have used mine just a couple of times, seen the results at f1.8 and tossed it into the cupboard - never used since.

i find that the sharpist point is about 2.2 - 2.4 but ive only had mine a couple of weeks

I pretty much a beginner at photography but I think its more than acceptable when printed out at 6 x 4 size, certainly sharper than my sigma 17-70.

If its that bad I would return it under warranty and get Canon to look into it.
Generally its regarded as a very sharp lens, ok it will be 'soft' at both ends of the aperture range but should be sharp enough to be useable even wide open.
Do you have any example pictures you can post up?

Is it deffo the lens?

Someone borrowed my Sigma 50mm f1.4 and declared it useless but it wasn't the lens it was user error. 50mm at the likes of 1.4 or f1.8 gives very limited DoF and any movement of the subject or the camera will have an effect so you have to make sure that you don't, for example, lean ever so slightly forward or back once focus has been achieved.

I found mine pretty damn awesome at 1.8.

I also have to agree its a very shallow DOF at 1.8, sharpens up a lot at 2.2 to 2.8

Great little lens in my book

Hey! that's not that bad actually.

When i got the lens I was relatively new to photography - probably some user
